Colour Grading the multi-Oscar-nominated movie, RRR

Written by S.S. Rajamouli, RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) is believed to be among the top-revenue films ever created to date in Indian cinema. It is a fictional tale about two famous revolutionaries, and their escape from their homeland before they began fight for freedom during the 1920s. The film stars two of Telugu the biggest screen icons of cinema, Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr.

It's become a global sensation, bringing in $145 million worldwide after its debut in March. It has enjoyed great popularity across North America, Australia, Japan and in the UK as well as Ireland. It's also competing in several different categories in the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Best Actor, and best visual effects. The winners will be announced in January 2023.

A Real Collabration

The film was shot by Annapurna Studio in Hyderabad and then graded on baselight by colorist Shiva Kumar BVR, who collaborated closely with a well-known cinematographer K.K. Senthil Kumar in order to create the desired appearance. They have collaborated at numerous times and have the same mindset regarding colour.

"I have worked with Senthil for almost all projects of mine," says Shiva. "We both share a similar way of thinking and a similar perception in determining the same density of colour among millions of colour shades. His eyesight is so sharp that he can spot an insignificant error and color jumps from a microsecond timed frame. I am able to get a clear understanding of what to expect through a thorough conversation with his. In addition, he doesn't sacrifice any aspect of quality."

Shiva participated in the filming process at an early stage, during the writing stage, and when he started working on the style of the film along with Senthil. "Senthil narrated the story before going to shoot and we exchanged some references in relation to colour palette, lighting scheme and mood boards to meet the required looks in post," says Shiva.

"The working-hard character in Senthil is the reason for having a high level of quality in each frame. Senthil's motivation helps us get away from the stress of the job and helps keep our performance in good shape throughout."
